| Brown Defends Northern Rock Talks
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown rejected accusations Sunday that his government was using taxpayer funds to make the sale of mortgage lender Northern Rock PLC more palatable for a private buyer. Brown also dismissed suggestions that Richard Branson, whose Virgin Group is Northern Rock's preferred bidder, had gained an unfair advantage because of his presence in a delegation of business leaders that is traveling with Brown in China and India. "I can reassure people entirely that any negotiations about Northern Rock will be taking place in London," Brown told reporters on Sunday. Northern Rock ran into trouble in September when short-term money markets dried up following the collapse of the U.S. subprime mortgage market. Heavily reliant on funding from those markets, Northern Rock approached the Bank of England for an emergency loan.
Pay agreements for WaMu execs changed
Washington Mutual altered employment agreements with Chief Executive Officer Kerry Killinger and Chief Operating Officer Stephen Rotella governing what they'll be paid if they leave or if the lender changes hands. The new terms change the definition used to calculate termination pay and add a six-month delay under some circumstances, the Seattle-based company said in a regulatory filing Monday. WaMu also changed its agreements with Chief Financial Officer Thomas Casey, James Corcoran, president of the retail bank, and all other executive officers giving them "certain payments and benefits" if the lender is sold. WaMu shares have dropped 70 percent in the past 12 months, giving it a market value of $11.7 billion. Zumiez Slower growth for sports retailer Shares of Everett-based Zumiez dropped 9.2 percent Monday after the action-sports retailer downgraded its outlook for fiscal 2007, citing slower growth in sales at stores open at least a year.
Deregulation and the Financial Crisis
There were good reasons for the Fed Policy, but that did not mean the Fed was helpless to prevent the housing bubble. As economists Dean Baker and Mark Weisbrot of the Center for Economic and Policy Research insisted at the time, Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan simply by identifying the bubble — and adjusting public perception of the future of the housing market — could have prevented or at least contained the bubble. He declined, and even denied the existence of a bubble. Regulatory Failure Number Three: Financial Deregulation and Unchecked Financial "Innovation." A key reason that mortgages were made available so widely and with such little review of recipients' qualifications was a shift in which institutions hold the mortgages. Traditionally, banks made mortgages and held them.

Hathorn v. Halter
Not a good answer mind you, but at least an attempt. By law the funds should have been returned by the Exploratory committee not rolled into Halter's other campaigns. If nothing else sounds like Hathorn has forced them to scramble to take corrective action, and put a $600,000 dent in their warchest. .
The secret scandal of the refugee beggars
If they can't get illegal work, they sleep on the streets, under railway arches and in shop doorways. THE only way the government will pay benefits to failed asylum seekers is if they formally agree to quit Britain at the first available opportunity. They won't get any benefit, however, unless they provide a reasonable excuse why they can't leave immediately. Exceptions are few: if a woman is more than seven months' pregnant, for example, that counts as a reason for delay. Even then, benefit payments can take months to process, leaving the failed refugee destitute. The "payments" are not in cash, though. Refugees get vouchers worth £35 a week to buy food and other necessities. Failed asylum seekers get no healthcare, either, except in an emergency. Even HIV/Aids sufferers cannot get free treatment.
Big Media Myopia at the FCC
Let's not be so intent on this slight change in the rules that we forget that all the rules of media ownership need to be reformed right down to the ground. Obvious, isn't it? But do the Democrats have a plan to break the almost exclusive power that six giant conglomerates have over the media, or are they just marking time until their own partners can grab a bigger slice of the pie? .
