CBA overhauls NetBank, website

THE Commonwealth Bank has upgraded its online banking service NetBank after customer feedback as the big banks try to push more services online.

The bank’s online banking service NetBank has been revamped with a new homepage and links to finance tools, with the changes to go live on Saturday. "NetBank …features an improved home page, simpler short cuts, customer news bulletins and links to useful tools such as budget planners and a home loan calculator," Ross McEwan, CBA group executive, retail banking services, said. "We started the ball rolling six months ago with the introduction of two-factor authentication for NetBank to deliver safer and more secure online banking." CBA has simplified the navigation process on its homepage and boosted the search function on the website.

Easing The Bite Of 401(K) Contributions

WE ALL KNOW we should be contributing as much as we possibly can to our 401(k)s. There's really no excuse not to. No matter how well you do with your other investments, you're unlikely to beat the 401(k)s advantages of tax-deferred growth and a company match. The bottom line: Max out.

So why don't we do it? Well, we've got tuition bills, car-loan payments, credit-card debt, medical bills, mortgages, etc., etc., etc. Fact is, most of us really don't want to see our paychecks shrink any further even if it's going to give us a more comfy retirement. That's why we developed this 401(k) contribution calculator. If you really crunch the numbers, the results may pleasantly surprise you. What most people don't realize is that increased contributions usually mean lower federal and state income taxes.

New Free Online Tools Make Accurate Mortgage Calculations a Few Clicks ...

New free on-line mortgage calculators give homebuyers detailed calculations at their finger tips. Calculations include taxes, insurance, PMI, closing cost and pre-paids for all 50 states. The perfect tool for homebuyers that are not financially savy, or lack mortgage knowledge.

(PRWEB) August 8, 2006 --Most new homebuyers have no finance background and little experience with mortgage loans, yet bank and mortgage brokers treat their online customers as expert Loan Officers. Today's online mortgage tools are completely inadequate and assume the user knows the intricacies of the mortgage business. New tools developed by The Mortgage Toolbox eliminates the 'guessing game' that occurs with those other so-called 'free sites', and allows consumers to find real answers about their home financing options.

Burmese pro-democracy activists at a rally in Tokyo on Nov 11 last ...

At the present time, Beijing is clearly not ready to apply real pressure to the junta. It still believes that working to resolve Burma's problems is secondary to pursuing its principal economic and strategic interests.

But simultaneously, China would like to solidify an international role as ''a responsible stakeholder.''

The time has come for concerted international diplomatic pressure on China to tip the balance toward responsibility. China must consider the sentiments of Thucydides: An amoral foreign policy is neither practical nor prudent.

At the same time, it should be obvious that the United States and the European Union cannot outsource Burma's transition to democracy to China, which itself lacks democracy.

Live from . . . An ever-changing music scene

Everything changes, especially in the shifting world of live music. Last year's favorite rock haunt might no longer be around - the past few years have seen a significant number of clubs shut their doors or discontinue live music - but odds are good a new hangout has materialized to take its place. In recent months a plethora of nightspots have opened their doors, begun booking shows, or altered their musical identities. Judging from the new lay of the land, the watchwords in clubland - as in the larger music world - are diversity and accessibility.

First, the bad news. Live-music casualties include the Kirkland Cafe, Tir Na Nog, and the Skybar in Somerville; Zeitgeist in Cambridge; and by the end of the month the Bulfinch Yacht Club near North Station. ZuZu in Cambridge, Common Ground in Allston, and the Baseball Tavern in the Fenway still thrive as bars but have discontinued live music.

McLeish hails Hampden heroics

The Scots took a massive step closer to qualifying for next summer's Euro 2008 finals with goals from Kenny Miller, Lee McCulloch and James McFadden at Hampden Park.

But the win came at a cost to McLeish, as McCulloch and substitute Garry O'Connor picked up bookings which will mean them missing Wednesday's match in Tbilisi.

With Paul Hartley and Gary Caldwell injured, the Scotland squad will be stretched to the limit.

Darren Fletcher, who has not played since he injured his knee in the 1-0 win over France in Paris last month, will return - but McLeish could be forced in to calling up extra players.

He said: "It was the best game we have played at Hampden since I've been here.

"It is a massive step towards qualifying - but I have mixed feelings because we have some walking wounded and we have suspensions.
