Roughneck, Bruised Head

Chantal Desharnais is no stranger to the outdoors or manual labour. Still, the 24-year-old Quebecker, who had previously worked in construction and spent a summer living on the banks of a B.C. river picking fruit for income had reservations about going to Calgary to work in the natural gas industry for the summer. But it was the moral dilemma of working in an industry she has ethical disagreements with, not the physical labour, she was concerned with, says the student in international relations at the Université du Québec à Montréal. As many before her, though, the lucrative work provided an opportunity to make enough money over the summer to cover her tuition fees and help with student loan debts.

But while she says she was prepared for the physical rigour of the work, she never expected the sexism she would face–or the serious injuries she would sustain.

Raging Cheryl Cole sends cheating husband Ashley packing

He wasn't worthy of Cheryl even before he took his pants off.

Oh, and let's not forget Ashley is "not very big". I hope footie fans are making up some chants.

Cheryl is in a league above every other WAG in existence and not just because she's independent and has her own career.

A little bit of my soul will die if she takes the Posh/McLoughlin route of pretending she's the only person who hasn't heard the rumours and everything's fine. And I'm pretty sure she won't.

Giving up on her marriage will probably be the hardest thing Cheryl's ever done.

But once a cheater, always a cheater - she has to leave a man who obviously has no respect for her. It's the understatement of the century to say that it's Ashley's loss.

And it's an out-and-out threat to say that I will kick him in the shin as hard as I can if I ever see him.

Fool Me Twice, Shame on Me

All said the story and NPP analysis lacked context because they did not report trends over the past several years and did not look at "nationally representative data" or the entire recruit population. A statement from Gilroy and Maxfield said that "incomes and socioeconomic status of recruits' families closely mirror the U.S. population. These findings are contrary to those" in Tyson's article. She goes on to quote a variety of other objections to the NPP study, then concludes:

My bottom line on polls and surveys, no matter what kind: Look for the widest context. Ask as many experts as possible what the numbers mean. Numbers can be right but not tell the full story, and that's the case with the article on recruiting. For her next column, perhaps Howell can explain how the Post managed to make the same mistake again.

Plea bargain gets man 2 1/2 years in prison; down from a possible 40

FARMINGTON — A man initially facing more than 40 years of prison time on domestic violence charges was sentenced in district court this week to serve less than three years.

Jose Silva, 34, initially had been charged with first-degree kidnapping, second-degree aggravated burglary, second-degree retaliation against a witness, fourth-degree aggravated stalking, and several misdemeanors including violating a restraining order, battery on a household member and possession of marijuana.

The charges were filed in December 2006 when the victim reported Silva hit her in the face and threatened to attack their infant child if the victim did not drive him where he wanted to go.

Those charges in October were reduced to just fourth-degree aggravated stalking and misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

Nominated councillors interview Anu, Harjinder

It seems that the nine nominated councillors of the Municipal Corporation have taken it upon themselves to choose the next Mayor of the city. The nine nominated by the UT Administration to assist the MC general house to carry out different activities are taking their vote for the post of Mayor too seriously.

They held interviews of the candidates for the post of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor today. The purpose of the interview was to assess the elected councillors of the MCC.

Ex-Mayors Anu Chatrath and Harjinder Kaur, along with the rest of their panel, today had to give a brief account of their profile, agenda and party manifesto to all nine nominated councillors. The interview session, which was held at the residence of nominated councillor Dr Amrit Bolaria, was followed by lunch, but not for those interviewed.

Sixth Swan Tests Positive For H5n1

A sixth swan from a sanctuary has tested positive for avian flu, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed.

The news comes after restrictions on the movement of poultry or other captive birds in the Wild Bird Monitoring Area around Abbotsbury Swannery in Dorset were lifted at 3pm on Friday.

However, movement restrictions in the Wild Bird Control Area remain in place, according to a Defra spokesman.

The spokesman added: "Defra has today confirmed that a sixth mute swan collected on 21 January as part of wild bird surveillance in the same area in Dorset has tested positive for highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza.

"This is not unexpected, and our enhanced surveillance of wild birds in the area is continuing, including active patrols to look for dead wild birds.
