IV. Human Rights Abuses and the War on Drugs

We still have to pay money back to banks, mortgage companies and loan sharks for her until today. If the police come to confiscate our belongings, we will have nothing left to survive.

The daughter was worried about having her possessions confiscated, because it was common during the war on drugs for those killed or arrested to have their money and properties confiscated in a broad interpretation of Thailand’s anti-money laundering law.

To date, no one has been arrested for the death of Somjit, and there is no sign that any serious investigation has ever been conducted.

Case Study: The killings of Sia-Jua Sae Thao, Somchai Sae Thao, Bunma Sae Thao, and Saeng Sae Thao

On February 12, 2003, just after noon, on the route to Wat Dhama Kaya Temple, Ban Neun Village, in Lom Kao District, Petchaborn Province (about fourteen kilometers from the victims’ village), four men were murdered as part of the war on drugs.

The Super Tuesday Strategy Guide

Unlike the Republicans, the Democratic National Committee awards all delegates on a proportional basis. That means Hillary and Obama are likely to pick up delegates in each of the 22 states. Edwards, meanwhile, is a wild card. He'll only receive delegates in a state if he clears the 15 percent viability threshold. If that happens, look for the tight race between Hillary and Obama to get even tighter, since they'll have trouble winning by huge margins. In which case, the contest is likely to extend well beyond Feb. 5.

Hillary Clinton: The proportional-delegate system doesn't help the national frontrunner because she can't rack up a commanding delegate lead. So, for Clinton, Feb. 5 is about maximizing her advantage in states that already favor her. She owns the tri-state delegate behemoth of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut (468 delegates total).

Who Controls Textbook Choices?

If we make students pay $300 for textbooks for our courses — especially when we know that we’re teaching students with strapped budgets — we’re not being very responsible. I’ve had to learn hard lessons about how my bookstore (and my bookstore supplier) works, and have had to make hard choices to get my students suitable textbooks for reasonable prices. I do it so that nobody takes that decision-making process out of my hands.

I know that’s easy for me to say as a science professor, because Maxwell’s equations are pretty non-controversial. But even as it applies to the humanities and social sciences, I don’t think picking a book and sticking with it for a few years is too big a price to ask us to pay...

Elbert: Ethanol's highs, lows make it top '07 biz story

Good news outweighed the bad for most Iowa businesses in 2007, with alternative energy leading the way. The Registers annual top 10 business stories are a reflection of that, with ethanol and wind energy laying claim to two of the top three positions on this years list.

Implosions Lower and Explosions Higher!

Dennis Meyers wrote an article for Stocks And Commodities magazine in 1995 and updated the original Ohama parameters to the ones given in our October 16th update. In that article, Meyers examined the signals given over the preceding 17 years and it turns out, by our calculations from his article, that the average decline from the closing price on the Dow on the day of the confirmed signal to the following low closing price was 7.9%. There were obviously noticeable variations in the results and we have not followed through with the results over the past 12-13 years.

We now have seen both a confirmed Hindenburg Omen signal and a confirmed Titanic Syndrome signal so it would be fair to say that the market is in a weakened technical condition.

Peter was kind enough to update his charts of years ending in 7 going back to 1897 and continuation charts for years ending in eight through last week:

Now let's look at how the pattern looks going into next year:

Actually looks like a great buying opportunity once the re-pricing of risk and the pricing in of the losses by the investment communities are completed.

The collapse of the modern day banking system

Fed chief Bernanke hasn't done much better than Paulson. His three-quarter point cut to the Fed's Funds rate hasn't lowered interest rates on mortgages, stimulated greater home sales, stabilized the stock market or helped banks deal with their massive debt-load. It's been a flop from start to finish. All it's done is weaken the dollar and trigger a wave of inflation. In fact, government figures now show energy prices are rising at 18.1 per cent annually. Bernanke is apparently following Lenin's supposed injunction though there's no conclusive evidence he actually said it -- that "the best way to destroy the Capitalist System is to debauch the currency."

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve initiated a "coordinated effort" with the Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the European Central Bank, and the Swiss National Bank to address the "elevated pressures in short-term funding of the markets." The Fed issued a statement that "it will make up to $24 billion available to the European Central Bank (ECB) and Swiss National Bank to increase the supply of dollars in Europe." [Bloomberg] The Fed will also add as much as $40 billion, via auctions, to increase cash in the U.S.

Shanth Sreesanth vows he won't back down

Why should we?" he said.

"We have players who can give it back with interest.

"What's the worst that can happen? Six sixes? I can always come back next over. All I need is just one ball to get him (the batsman) out."

Regents eye 3.2% tuition hike

The Iowa Board of Regents voted 5-to-3 to give initial approval to 2008-09 tuition increases that average 3.2 percent.

Regent President Michael Gartner lobbied for lower increases of 2 percent to signal appreciation to the Iowa Legislature, which granted the universities their full budget request of $65 million earlier this year.

My own view is that we could do something for the students and the parents by holding it down in this coming year and see what the legislature does (next year), Gartner said.

The presidents of the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa said the average 3.2 percent hike would barely keep up with increasing operating costs. The 3.2 percent increase is the lowest for Iowas public universities since 1980.
