Reverse mortgage workshop informs public about the pros and cons

Local residents gathered at the Kernville Chamber of Commerce Jan. 16 to learn more about reverse mortgages. The Prince Financial Corporation representative, Barbara Prince, Bankers First representative Rylan Rozell and Patty Nash of McKenzie and Nielsen provided those in attendance with large packets of information on the ins and outs of reverse mortgages including the negative aspects of entering into a reverse mortgage. The purpose of the presentation was to educate as well as provide financial opportunities for seniors.

According to the Reverse Mortgage Page website over 50,000 Americans applied for reverse mortgages in 2006. A reverse mortgage is a way to borrow against the equity in your home rather than a forward mortgage where you are attempting to purchase a home and build home equity by making mortgage payments.

Gazans Flood Egypt After Border Breach

Local money changers began charging extra to change Israeli shekels into dollars, as Gazans were using the U.S. currency in Egypt.

Crowds waited along roads in Gaza City, trying to catch rides to the border. Taxi driver Mahmoud Abu Ouda made one trip to Rafah, but stopped because he had no more fuel.

"The city is empty of cabs. They are all in Rafah," he said.

Sustainability of Cash Distributions

On June 22, 2007, the Federal Government's Tax Fairness Plan (part of Bill C-52) became law. As a result, publicly-traded flow-through entities such as income funds, royalty trusts and limited partnerships will be subject to taxation commencing January 1, 2011. In recent months there has been considerable debate within the investment community and the media regarding the sustainability of current cash distributions paid by such entities once they become taxable.

Helping to build an inclusive society

Some departments don't do as we say, but most have improved . . . they can't all be the same," she adds.

The department of housing has performed well and awarded tenders to women, but the committee noted that the youth and people with disabilities were often overlooked.

Senokoanyane makes it clear she is not out to win a popularity contest.

"Our role is not to fight with departments but help them improve. Some departments are often unhappy with us but we have a job to do," she says.

The committee also drops in at department offices and construction sites to "ensure what's on paper is indeed a reality".

And visiting other provinces helps forestall problems .

"It helps a great deal engaging with committees in other provinces because in that way we learn of ways to avert problems like that of unqualified (traditional) surgeons at initiation schools and other issues that affect the youth," she says.

Australian terror laws under scrutiny

The first came in late February, when Dr Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the US Federal Reserve, suggested to a Gold Coast business summit that the American economy might be moving into a recession four words that wiped 416 points off the Dow Jones index.
The second featured the more diminutive figure of Dr Mohammed Haneef, the 27-year-old Indian doctor charged in connection with the failed UK bomb attacks.
After arriving in Australia last September, he worked at the Gold Coast Hospital and lived in an apartment complex nearby, complete with palm trees and a pool.
Just as Dr Greenspans comments focused global attention on the resilience of the US economy, Dr Haneefs arrest, questioning, charge and now immigration detention have put Australias new terror laws under close international and domestic scrutiny.

What's $250K between acquaintances?

Mr Fraser was arrested over an incident near Port Macquarie on Boxing Day. Police allege he entered a property at Pappinbarra and argued with his alleged victim, George Grue, over stolen property. Mr Fraser then allegedly pulled a shortened .22-calibre rifle out of his backpack and fired at Mr Grue, missing him by just 50cm. Police allege Mr Fraser was reloading the weapon when Mr Grue charged at him. They allege Mr Fraser shot at Mr Grue for a second time, but missed again. He then allegedly reloaded for a third time but the gun jammed and he left the property. Police facts tendered in court claim Mr Grue and several of his friends did not report the incident immediately. Instead they waited on the property for two days before driving into a nearby town for groceries and other supplies. When Mr Grue drove back to the property, the tyres on his vehicle were punctured by home-made road spikes.

The Super Tuesday Strategy Guide

Unlike the Republicans, the Democratic National Committee awards all delegates on a proportional basis. That means Hillary and Obama are likely to pick up delegates in each of the 22 states. Edwards, meanwhile, is a wild card. He'll only receive delegates in a state if he clears the 15 percent viability threshold. If that happens, look for the tight race between Hillary and Obama to get even tighter, since they'll have trouble winning by huge margins. In which case, the contest is likely to extend well beyond Feb. 5.

Hillary Clinton: The proportional-delegate system doesn't help the national frontrunner because she can't rack up a commanding delegate lead. So, for Clinton, Feb. 5 is about maximizing her advantage in states that already favor her. She owns the tri-state delegate behemoth of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut (468 delegates total).
