McGinnis: Kicking the bucket

Knowing there isn't enough in the bank to care for his wife and disabled son, he decides to build the balance by cooking and selling crystal meth.

As Walter navigates the dangers of his new career choice, he embraces life in an entirely new way.

What a shame it takes death to bring value to life.

Unburdened as I am with concerns about heirs, I could probably get cracking on my bucket list right away. Today, on my birthday, I thought I'd put it in writing.

Hire a movie theater to share some of my favorite films with friends. There would be a buffet of popcorn, sodas, hot dogs and Junior Mints. I want us all to have a chance to see “The Enchanted Cottage," “The Seekers," “To Kill a Mockingbird," “Bladerunner," “Philadelphia Story," “Citizen Kane," “You Can't Take It With You," and “Steel Magnolias" on a big screen once more before I go.

Ratings could ease parents' agony

The highest state rating would mirror national accreditation standards, the gold standard for child care.

Right now, only about 130 child care centers in South Carolina are nationally accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

The national accreditation program is particularly important in South Carolina, where parents looking for high-quality child care have little information on which to base their decision, said Don Owens, the national association's director of public affairs. "Parents often don't know what good quality looks like," he said. "If the toys look fresh and there aren't wires sticking out of the ceiling, they think it's OK. What about curriculum and teachers' education?"

Bank of America to buy struggling mortgage provider

Bank of America announced yesterday that it is buying Countrywide Financial Corp., the largest mortgage broker in the United States, in an all-stock transaction worth about US$4 billion.

The takeover by the largest US consumer bank could help save the California-based company from bankruptcy, but possible impact on jobs was not immediately detailed, observers said.

A statement from Bank of America's headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, said the acquisition will make it the nation's largest mortgage lender and loan service provider.

Countrywide, the subject of widespread talk about possible impending bankruptcy in recent days, "will benefit from the stability of being part of the largest and one of the most financially strong financial institutions in the United States," the bank said in the statement.

S&P Stock Picks and Pans: Microsoft, Countrywide Financial, Merrill ...

CFC posts third quarter operating loss of $2.12 vs. EPS of $1.02, $0.63 wider than our loss estimate. Results were hurt by the writedown of securities, higher provisions, restructuring charges and a 27% sequential drop in loan volume, reflecting higher standards and transfer of production to CFC's bank operation. The one bright spot was CFC's loan servicing sector, which posted pre-tax earnings of $681 million before the impact of valuation adjustments. Non-performing assets/assets jumped to 1.65% from 1.26% in the second quarter. CFC expects to be profitable in the fourth quarter. Will update after conference call. - S. Plesser

An unconfirmed report in the New York Times says that Merrill Lynch CEO Stanley O'Neal's job may be in jeopardy after he approached a Wachovia Corp.

EDEX - National Higher Education and Careers EXPO

For the school leavers of today, the world is a swirl of options to choose from, be it higher education, professional qualifications or employment. Information on these choices are varied and sometimes from conflicting sources. The EDEX 2008 National Higher Education and Careers Expo organized by the Royal College Union aspires to cater to the needs of this age-group by displaying the full range of options available.

Many education fairs are extremely helpful to students, with the one disadvantage being that most fairs are often carried out in Colombo. EDEX however is the only twin mega exhibition to be held in both Colombo and Kandy. The Kandy leg of the fair will be held at the Queen’s Hotel, Kandy on January 22-23, officials told the media.

This 5th EDEX aspires to be bigger and better than the earlier ones.

Not because he doesn't want to talk. Magedson loves talking, especially when the subject is his beloved Web site.

It's just that he's so incredibly particular. Arranging one simple meeting is an exercise that captures, perfectly, why Magedson is so good at getting results — and why he's infuriated the CEOs of several midsize companies to the point that they accuse him, flatly, of extortion. He overthinks every detail. And it would never occur to him to stop pushing before he gets what he wants, even if he's not sure what that is.

First there's where to meet. It has to be a public place. A dog park? A restaurant? Even after Magedson decides on lunch at Chompie's, he calls back with instructions about which bank of booths to pick. He's planning to park in the handicapped spot, he says, and from the right booth, he'll be able to keep an eye on his dog.

Ledger's Funeral Arrangements a Mystery

That eliminated "any need to interview Miss Olsen," he said.Ledger's family placed a death notice in The West Australian, a newspaper based in his hometown of Perth, remembering him as "the most amazing 'old soul' in a young man's body."The actor's sister, Kate, said she could "hardly breathe" as she tried to write her tribute. "We were the ultimate soul mates," she said."You were so many things to so many people, but to me you were just my little brother."The cause of Ledger's death will not be known for at least a week, after medical examiners complete toxicology tests. Authorities suspect a possible drug overdose. Several prescription drugs were found in the Manhattan apartment where Ledger's body was found. .

Who Controls Textbook Choices?

If we make students pay $300 for textbooks for our courses — especially when we know that we’re teaching students with strapped budgets — we’re not being very responsible. I’ve had to learn hard lessons about how my bookstore (and my bookstore supplier) works, and have had to make hard choices to get my students suitable textbooks for reasonable prices. I do it so that nobody takes that decision-making process out of my hands.

I know that’s easy for me to say as a science professor, because Maxwell’s equations are pretty non-controversial. But even as it applies to the humanities and social sciences, I don’t think picking a book and sticking with it for a few years is too big a price to ask us to pay...
