Peyton Manning is thrilled that his little brother (Eli, in case you were wondering) is in his first Super Bowl. He's also convinced it won't be his last. “I feel very strongly that this will not be the last Super Bowl he will play in," Peyton said on a conference call a few minutes ago. “I just think he's got what it takes to lead his team to championships." Peyton cited both Eli's work ethic and talent as a reason for his belief that his brother won't be a one and done. In fact, he believes both the Giants and Colts will be in contention for Super Bowls for years. Which begs the question … What about the Manning vs. Manning Super Bowl everyone was talking about halfway through last season? “It certainly could happen," Peyton said.
WHAT THE PAPERS SAY
DAILY MAIL: Rafa Benitez appeared to climb down in the bitter feud with his Anfield bosses yesterday and launched an impassioned plea to be kept on as Liverpool manager. Despite a ``constructive'' two-hour meeting with chief executive Rick Parry on Monday night and a planned protest march by worried supporters ahead of tonight's Champions League clash with Porto, Benitez's three-and-a-half year reign continues to hang by a thread. Co-owners George Gillett and, in particular, Tom Hicks have become exasperated with Benitez's recent conduct and could even use the excuse of an early European exit to fire him should Liverpool falter against the Portuguese League leaders. Also: Terry Venables moved a step closer to becoming new Ireland boss last night...Paul Jewell is the front-runner for the vacant manager's position at Derby County.
Coke near Honest Tea stake deal - report
In its eighth year in business, Honest Tea posted $13.5 million in annual sales. "Honest is a very small brand, but has attracted attention due to its organic positioning," John D. Sicher, editor of Beverage Digest, told CNNMoney.com in an e-mail Wednesday. "Linking up would be a positive for Coke." Both a Coca-Cola spokesman and an Honest Tea spokeswoman declined comment on the report. Honest Tea would join Coke's line of noncarbonated beverages in North America, including Glaceau's Vitamin Water, Fuze and Campbell's. Although Coca-Cola sells Nestea and Gold Peak tea drinks, it still remains behind PepsiCo (PEP, Fortune 500), privately held Arizona, and Cadbury Schweppes (CSG) in take-home market share for the segment. As consumer tastes shift from carbonated soft drinks toward water, juices and teas, Coca-Cola said it expects overall revenue will increase in the high-single-digit percentage range due to changes in its product mix in 2008.
Bill helps boost draft registration
Well, with luck, this legislator will soon get defeated and then can volunteer, if he wants, to join up and salute his superiors with more stripes than he has. But this will probably not happen -- those politicians that are most warlike generally, and not specifically, are those that avoided it at all costs when they could have gone.Posted: Sat Jan 12, 2008 1:08 pm .
Motley Fool Personal Finance: Beware The Two-Tier Mortgage
If you dislike horror stories then please look away now, especially if you borrow money. That's because a two-tier mortgage market is just around the corner. According to the Bank of England, lenders scaled back lending to households in the last three months of 2007 as strains in the money market took its toll. The Bank's quarterly credit survey shows that households found it increasingly difficult to borrow money towards the end of last year. Unsecured lending, which includes credit cards, personal loans and car financing, fell. Worryingly, secured lending, which are loans secured against properties, also fell as a result of banks reducing their appetite for risk. The upshot is that some homeowners who are coming off fixed-rate mortgage deals may find it difficult to get new loans.
Wild Card/Vacation Day 11 of 12
Only two more shopping days until I return to the final days of the City Council campaigns. Then, we'll have fun taking apart the campaigns. Any dirt yet? Any mudslinging. You know, the good stuff. Or is everyone behaving? My wife is now looking over my shoulder -- literally -- so I have to pretend that I'm just checking ball scores. See ya in two days. Here's Wild Card ... .
